About SAEQA

The South African Equitation Association (SAEQA) is committed to promoting the art and discipline of equitation — the correct, effective practice of riding and horsemanship.

First introduced to South Africa in the 1970s by Mrs. Charlotte Stubbs, equitation was developed to improve rider skill and awareness, particularly for those without access to regular or formal instruction.

Unlike other riding disciplines, equitation focuses on the rider rather than the horse, evaluating:

  • Rider position and posture

  • Balance and control

  • Use of aids

  • Overall effectiveness and harmony with the horse

Our competitions are inclusive and educational, welcoming riders of all ages and ability levels. Each rider receives constructive feedback from experienced, qualified judges, making every show a valuable learning opportunity.

SAEQA supports internationally recognised riding standards and aims to foster growth through detailed critique, commitment to correct form, and an emphasis on subtle, effective communication with the horse.

A successful equitation rider exemplifies poise, precision, and partnership — moving in quiet harmony with their horse through invisible aids and thoughtful riding.
